Here is the information about our program this coming Sunday. For more details, please visit our website at www.jgsgb.org. Special Notice: A wedding will be taking place at Temple Emanuel at the same time as our program. We have been asked to enter and leave the building using the doors at the far right-hand end of the building, near Reisman Hall, where our meeting will take place, so as not to interfere with the wedding festivities. The DNA of the Jewish People,
Similarities and Differences
Robert Weinberg Sunday, January 16, 2011 1:30 PM Reisman Hall Temple Emanuel, Newton, MA The relationships between species and even between individuals can be traced by examining the sequences of the DNA that they carry. As species evolve and races grow older, their DNA sequences begin to diversify. This allows one to plot, with some precision, the DNA sequences that are characteristic of different species, different ethnic groups, and even in rare instances, different families. These issues will be presented without any assumptions of preexisting knowledge of biology! Professor Robert Weinberg is a pioneer in cancer research most widely known for his lab's discoveries of the first human oncogene and the isolation of the first known tumor suppressor gene. His current research focuses on how cancer cells metastasize. Prof. Weinberg has held research positions at the Weizman Institute and the Salk Institute. His work has earned him the National Medal of Science, the Wolf Prize of Medicine, and the title "Scientist of the Year" from Discover magazine in 1982. Spotlight Talk Jay Sage, Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Boston board member, will describe the Family Tree DNA Family Finder test. This will be followed by a discussion of the Family Finder test results by Bob Weinberg and Jay Sage. How worthwhile is the Family Finder test in helping one find cousins and in determining how closely they are related? Sunday, February 13 (Temple Emanuel) Sunday, March 13 (Temple Emanuel) A flyer in Adobe PDF format is available from our website at flyer.jgsgb.org. We encourage
you to print it out and post copies in places where you think it
would attract attendees, such as synagogues, community centers,
