JGSGB Workshop

Planning Your Family Reunion

Sunday, February 8, 2015         1:30 - 3:30 pm

at Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel, Newton, MA

If you are planning a family reunion or even just thinking about the possibility, this workshop will provide ideas and suggestions to make the planning process easier and lead to an enjoyable reunion experience for all.  JGSGB members Beverley Olsberg and Sheila Green will share what they learned when they each planned a successful family reunion. Beverley will transport you to Zambia, her birthplace and the site of her family reunion. Sheila will share the processes and techniques she used for planning her family reunion in Chicago, including the use of more recently available technology.

Sheila Green grew up in Chicago, went to high school and college in California, and lived in Alaska before moving to the Boston area. As a result of her relocations, she lost contact with her extended family. After Sheila began her genealogical journey and found most of her first cousins who had also lost contact with one another, they asked her to organize a family reunion. The result was a three-day reunion in Chicago that was attended by over 80 relatives.

Beverley Olsberg was born and raised in Livingstone, Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia) and has roots in Lithuania. She moved to London at age 18 and lived there for nearly 50 years until she came to Boston.  She remained in touch with most of her extended family who had dispersed across the globe due to unrest in Central Africa. In 1996, she organized a family reunion at the Victoria Falls in Zambia that included five generations, including 108 descendants attending from eight countries.
