Congregation Beth El-Atereth Israel, Newton
Jews in “the land of the Litvaks” lived alongside their non-Jewish neighbors for nearly seven centuries before the Holocaust. Ellen Cassedy, author of the award-winning We Are Here: Memories of the Lithuanian Holocaust (University of Nebraska Press, 2012), will explore the rich cultural history of Lithuanian Jews, including the social structure of a multi-cultural world, the daily lives of women and men in villages, towns, and cities, and the dreams, aspirations, and challenges faced by our ancestors.
Ellen Cassedy has
traveled and studied in Lithuania, the home of her Jewish ancestors.
She was a columnist for the Philadelphia Daily News and a speechwriter
in the Clinton Administration. Her work has been published in Polin,
Shofar, Ha’aretz, Hadassah, The Jewish Forward, the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, and other publications. Her book, We Are Here: Memories of the Lithuanian Holocaust,
was praised by the Jewish Book Council as “brilliantly balanced,
totally engaging, and constantly penetrating.” She lives in the
Washington, D.C. area.

Do you have books on Jewish history, religion or culture that you’d like to donate? A newly-restored Jewish cultural center in the Azores has asked for our help in obtaining books. Please bring your books to our program on May 17 from noon to 4 pm. Persons wishing to donate books who can’t get to the program this Sunday should contact Candice to make other arrangements.
A synagogue building in the Azores, founded in 1836 by Sephardic merchants from Morocco, has been restored and recently rededicated. Although there is no longer a Jewish community in the city of Ponta Delgada, there are plans to use the synagogue building for a cultural learning center including a museum and library. Dr. Jose Mello, the on-site historian, requests donations of books on Jewish religion, culture and history. You are encouraged to write your name inside your donated books.
