Finding Your Ancestors in Polish Records

Abstract

More American Jews have roots in Poland than in any other country. The Poles kept very good track of their citizens through metrical (birth, marriage, and death) records, population registers, and other documents. While many of these records were destroyed during the war, a surprising number has survived and can be found in Polish archives, even for localities no longer in Poland. Bussgang will describe what records exist, what they look like, and how you can access them (many of them now via the Internet).

Biography

Ms. Bussgang has authored over 20 articles published in genealogical journals, as well as the “Russian Poland” section of the Avotaynu Guide to Jewish Genealogy. She and her Polish-born husband, Julian, have done extensive genealogical research during 12 trips to Poland. They have also translated two volumes of wartime accounts of child survivors still living in Poland. Ms. Bussgang served as co-president of the JGS of Greater Boston from 1998 to 2000.
