Please note the following:
  • Because of complications with room availability at Temple Emanuel, the usual order of our programs will be different. We will have research time starting at 1:30 in the Benjamin Vestry. The two talks will be held in the usual room, Reisman Hall, starting at 2:15.

  • Don't forget that Daylight Savings Time starts. Be sure to "spring forward" (i.e., set your clock one hour higher).

Mapping Madness:
Historical Maps and Google Earth

Ron Arons and Jay Sage

Sunday, March 14, 2010
1:30 PM (Research); 2:15 PM (Talks)
Temple Emanuel, Newton, MA

The main presentation by Ron Arons's will cover (1) websites that provide a broad range of historical maps, (2) basic and advanced features of Google's and Microsoft's Internet-based mapping facilities (maps.google.com and www.bing.com/maps), and (3) lesser-known mapping facilities provided by whitepages.com, Microsoft's MapCruncher, and IBM's Many Eyes.

Jay Sage's short presentation will introduce Google Earth, the Web-based facility that provides a high-resolution, three-dimensional model of the Earth based on satellite and aerial photographs (see earth.google.com). Sage will describe how it can be used genealogically: to map one's family history or to make virtual visits to places where family events took place.

Ron Arons has spoken at several international conferences on a variety of genealogy topics. He appeared in the PBS TV series The Jewish Americans to discuss Jewish criminals of New York's Lower East Side and published The Jews of Sing Sing in 2008. Jay Sage is a former president of the Society, current co-editor of the Society's journal, Mass-Pocha, and has given lectures at international and local conferences.
