Calling English Speakers
JGSGB has two current research projects, both so successful that we are in need of reinforcements for the volunteers who are working on them. Both projects
- Can be done at home
- Require no knowledge of Hebrew
- Need only basic spreadsheet ability - enter data from on-screen images into supplied Excel sheet
Memorial Plaques
JGSGB has contributed about half of the 80,000 plaque transcriptions that make up the JewishGen Memorial Plaques Database.
How important is this project? Recently, a Boston Globe story told about the closing of a long-standing Shul in Revere, Temple Tifereth Israel. The building will be torn down and replaced with retail shops and housing.
Fortunately we already have their collection of 678 memorial plaques transcribed and digitized. JewishGen has the data on its website.
We continue to accumulate plaque photos from Massachusetts synagogues, Hebrew schools, and community centers. We need more transcribers to enter plaque photo information into spreadsheets. To volunteer contact plaques [at] jgsgb.org

Seeking Kin
A newer and fascinating project is the extraction of genealogical information from advertisements published in the Boston Jewish Advocate by agencies attempting to reunite families and friends separated involuntarily and unaware of each other’s whereabouts. Most of the unfinished ads are from 1957 to 1980.
You will be working with digital images of the advertisements. To volunteer contact seekingkin [at] jgsgb.org

If you can read these, you can help:

Be part of these projects. It is very gratifying when genealogists from around the country let us know of their excitement when they find a relative in one of these record sets on jewishgen.org!
